Question :6

X and Y put in Rs 3,000 and Rs 4,000 respectively into a business. X reinvests into the business his share of the first year's profit of Rs 2,100 whereas Y does not reinvest. In what ratio should they share the second year's profit ?

Answer: (c)

For first year, ratio of profit = 3 : 4

X's profit of first year = $3/7$ × 2100 = Rs 900

Now, for second year,

Ratio of profit = 3000 × 12 + 900 × 12 : 4000 × 12

= 46800 : 48000 = 39 : 40

Question :7

Salaries of A, B and C were in the ratio 3 : 5 : 7, respectively. If their salaries were increased by 50%, 60% and 50% respectively, what will be the new ratio of the their respective new salaries ?

Answer: (d)

New ratio of their respective salaries

= $3 × {150}/{100}: 5 ×: {160}/{100} : 7 × {150}/{100}$

= $9/2 : 8 : {21}/2$ = 9 : 16 : 21

Question :8

A contractor undertook to do a certain piece of work in 9 days. He employed certain number of men, but 6 of them being absent from the very first day, the rest could finish the work in 15 days. The number of men originally employed were :

Answer: (a)

Let there be x men at the beginning.

Number of men ∝ $1/{\text"number of days"}$ (Indirect Proportion)

Men : x : x – 6

Days : 15 : 9

∴ 15 : 9::x : (x - 6)⇒15(x - 6) 9x

⇒6x = 90⇒x = 15.

Question :9

A, B, C, D and E start a partnership firm. Capital contributed by A is three times that contributed by D. E contributes half of A's contribution, B contributes one-third of E's contribution and C contributes two-third of A's contribution. If the difference between the combined shares of A, D and E and the combined shares of B and C in the total profit of the firm is Rs.13,500, what is the combined share of B, C and E? (The shares are supposed to be proportional to the contributions)

Answwer: (a)

Let contribution of D be x

Contribution of A = x × 3 = 3x

Contribution of E = 3x × $1/2 = {3x}/2$

Contribution of B = ${3x}/2 × 1/3 = x/2$

Contribution of C = 3x × $2/3$ = 2x

According to the question

$(3x + x + {3x}/2) - (x/2 + 2x)$ = 13500

${11x}/2 - {5x}/2$ = 13500

${6x}/2$ = 13500 = ∴ x = 4500

Total share of B, C and E

= ${4500}/2 + 2 × 4500 + {3 × 4500}/2$ = 18000

Question :10

A milkman bought 15 kg of milk and mixed 3 kg of water in it. If the price per kg of the mixture becomes Rs. 22, what is cost price of the milk per kg?

Answer: (a)

Let cost price of milk Rs.x per kg.

Price of 15kg of milk = Rs.15x.

Now, mix 3kg of water, therefore quantity of mixture = (15 + 3) kg = 18 kg

So, price of mixture is Rs.22 per kg

According to question.

15x = 22 × 18 22

x = ${22 × 18}/{15} = {132}/5$ = 26.40

Alternate Method :

Let CP of milk be Rs.x per kg.

By Alligation method

ratio-and-proportion-aptitude-mcq

∴ 22 : (x – 22) = 15 : 3

⇒${22}/{x - 22} = {15}/3$

⇒${22}/{x - 22}$ = 5

⇒22 = 5x – 110

⇒5x = 132

∴ x = Rs.26.40
